Navy lends helping hand to devotees engage in ‘Paada Yaathra’

Sri Lanka Navy on 30th June 2023 began providing assistance to devotees who are marching the annual foot pilgrimage, known as ‘Paada Yaathra’ from Jaffna to Sella Kathragama Devalaya. Accordingly, the Navy looked into the requirements of the pilgrims marching the segment from the entrance of Kumana National Park to Kumbukkan Oya. Meanwhile, the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera inspected the services provided by the Navy for the convenience of devotees and joined the foot pilgrimage heading Katharagama, on 03rd July.

Specialized training enhances skills of Naval Kenel Unit and SBS sniffer dogs

The Sri Lanka Navy organized a specialized training session for the Naval Kenel Unit and SBS sniffer dogs from 01st to 05th July 2024 in Western Naval Command Headquarters, Colombo harbour. This session, focused on detection of narcotics, was conducted with the support of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB) and the Police Sniffer Dog Training Unit.

Navy renders assistance for successful conduct of Centennial Anniversary of the coronation of Our Lady of Madhu

The feast of the Shrine of Madhu in Mannar, celebrating the Centennial Anniversary of the coronation of Our Lady of Madhu, was held under the patronage of His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo on 02nd July 2024. The Sri Lanka Navy facilitated the proceedings of the event, for the convenience of devotees.

Nautical Institute – United Kingdom recognizes SLN officers excelled in academic studies

The Sri Lanka Branch of the Nautical Institute honoured the academic excellence of Sri Lanka Navy officers and officers from merchant marine field in a ceremony held at Wave n’ Lake Navy Hall, Welisara on 29th June 2024. The certificate and award presentation took place, with Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, the Commander of the Navy, presiding over the ceremony.

Navy undertakes dive to WW II shipwreck of HMS Hermes

In a remarkable dive that highlighted historical reverence, the Diving Unit of the Sri Lanka Navy on 30th June 2024 explored the sunken remains of HMS Hermes, a fascinating and historic World War II shipwreck off Batticaloa. The event, which took place in the eastern seas, was joined by the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera and former Commander of the Navy, Admiral Piyal De Silva (Retd). During the World War II, HMS Hermes was targeted and ultimately sunk by Japanese aircraft.

The Sri Lanka Navy today (30th June 2024) commenced its support for devotees participating in the annual 'Paada Yaathra' foot pilgrimage from Jaffna to Sella Katharagama. The Navy is specifically attending to the needs of pilgrims along the route from the entrance of Kumana National Park to Kumbukkan Oya. This assistance will continue until 11th July.

Navy celebrates World Hydrography Day

In celebration of World Hydrography Day (21st June), the Sri Lanka Navy Hydrographic Service marked the occasion at Wave n' Lake Navy Hall in Welisara today (28th June 2024). At the invitation of the Chief Hydrographer of the Sri Lanka Navy, Rear Admiral Kosala Warnakulasooriya and Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, the event was graced by Hon. Premitha Bandara Tennakoon, the State Minister of Defence, as the Chief Guest.

Fleet Chief Petty Officer PDP Rathnayake laid to rest with full Navy honours

In a solemn ceremony filled with deep reverence and respect, Fleet Chief Petty Officer PDP Rathnayake was laid to rest with full Navy honours at Hipauwa General Cemetery in Ibbagamuwa on 27th June 2024. The senior sailor succumbed to his injuries, during an operation to seize an Indian trawler poaching in Sri Lankan waters on 25th June off Kankasanthurai, Jaffna. The funeral ceremony was attended by Fisheries Minister, Hon. Douglas Devananda and members of Northern Fishermen Cooperative Associations.
